Moisture is the KEY! My curls are so much better defined since I've started using her methods and products because they keep moisture in and frizzy hair stays away.
"Curly Girl" helps you discover your type of curl, from wavy to zigzag, and comes with a DVD that shows you what to do for each type of curl. The book will tell you how to use small metal hair clips to hold your curls in place and give volume too (here's a video tutorial).
I knew it was working after I tried the method and products because I received more compliments about my curls in one week than I had in a year.
A GREAT haircut will set your curls FREE! My hair is layered and cut in a special way that works especially for curls. I went to a hairstylist who is DevaCurl trained to give haircuts like they recommend in Curly Girl.
My hairstylist has some great photos of curly hair on her website here. You can find a DevaCurl trained stylist here.
It takes me about 10 minutes to wash, condition and put gel in my hair like they recommend in Curly Girl. I leave in most of the conditioner and I use a lot of gel. Then I put in small metal hair clips around the front to set the curls in place and give lift while it dries.
Sometimes I gently twist up larger parts on the sides and back and hold them with large plastic clips. After that, I spray it with "Set it Free." Depending on how much time I have, I either let it air-dry, or I blow-dry with a diffuser on a lower setting so it doesn't disturb the curls.
Use the Pixie-Curl method to blow dry your hair without frizz. Here's a video.
I also do what the book says in not washing my hair every day. It's too drying. I wash it about every 3 days. At night I twist and hold my curls with clips in front , then I tip my head over and put it up in a loose pony tail on top of my head with a soft scrunchie.
To really keep frizz away I wear a silk nightcap. On the days I don't wash my hair I wear a shower-cap so the moisture from the shower doesn't cause frizz.

Here is another blog post from a woman who wrote about her experience trying the "Curly Girl" method and the products she uses here.
I wanted to let anyone who suffers with acne know about a book called, The Acne Cure: The Nonprescription Plan That Shows Dramatic Results in as Little as 24 Hours. Following the plan has given me great results. There are a few different products you will need:
- 2% Salicylic Face Wash (kills surface bacteria)
- 10% Glycolic Acid (promotes cell turnover)
- 10% Benzoyl Peroxide (kills bacteria in pores)
- A face moisturizer you like (oil-free)
- Ice cubes (helps get the benzoil peroxide into the cells to kill the bacteria)
- Ice pack (optional)
*Start slow with one step at a time over the course of a week
DIRECTIONS: In the morning and at night I use a 2% Salicylic wash like one of these.
Put a small amount of wash in your palm and mix in water until it foams up, then put it on your face. Leave it on your face for about a minute or more, so it can kill the surface bacteria (if it's too drying, just put it on and wash it back off immediately). You can put in on in the shower, then wash your hair, then wash it off your face:
MORNING: I follow the face wash with 10% Glycolic Acid and moisturizer. I've found the best prices for 10% Glycolic Acid at Ulta or Amazon for Alpha Hydrox Oil-Free Formula.
NIGHT: At night I do the face wash again and follow the face wash by rubbing an ice cube everywhere on my face until it is VERY cold, then I put the 10% benzoyl peroxide treatment in my palm and mix a little cold water with it (from the ice cube) and put it all over my face (watch out for your eyebrows and shirt it will bleach them). I like this one: 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Gel
Then I put an ice pack on my face and rest for about 10 minutes. Most of the time I don't do this--I'm just too tired--but it still works and my acne is TONS better in the morning.
One of the surprising things in the book is using ice to get the benzoyl peroxide into the pores and help get rid of the inflammation and blemishes. It really works! There are great reviews that go into the details on Amazon.
PS: The GLYCOLIC acid treatment also gets rid of fine lines! It is awesome stuff!
PSS: When you first start this program GO SLOW so your skin gets used to the products. Only do the NIGHT routine at first, then after a week add in the morning program. If your face gets too dry or reacts then go back to once a day.
